Levi's Rolls out Hybrid Polybags as a Sustainable Packaging
Levi's is looking to work towards a more sustainable future with its new hybrid polybags that keep its denim clean for users whilst taking care of the earth. Once the bags have served their purpose, they can be composted in the comfort of consumers' homes or at the nearest recycling center instead of being discarded at a landfill. The hybrid bags are made with 23%-25% bio-based materials that also help with reducing fossil fuel consumption.
This idea came into fruition as Levi's was to work together with Fashion for Good, which is a global organization that is dedicated to finding sustainable solutions for clothing. The brand's Chief Sustainability OFficer Jeffery Hogue notes, “This project not only moves us toward achieving our goal of eliminating single-use plastic, but it also puts into practice the industry collaboration required to solve these ubiquitous industry challenges.” Currently, the polybags are not a permanent shift but it is an experiment that rolls out for the next 6 months in the US and Sri Lanka.

Zero Carbon Farms Offsets its Zero-Carbon Emissions by 10%
Zero Carbon Farms is a company that aims to achieve carbon-negative farming, which means offsetting more carbon emissions than it produces. It has built a farm in an old air raid shelter that is powered by 100% renewable energy and grows crops that use less space, water, and time. The company has obtained certification as a Carbon Neutral + Organization, meaning they are net carbon negative and have offset their historic emissions through tree planting initiatives. Currently, the company offsets an additional 10% of its net-zero carbon emissions, certifying it as a carbon-negative farming company.
Zero Carbon Farms also has a sustainability strategy in place to reduce its carbon footprint going forward, including considerations for water, waste, packaging, distribution, and supply chain emissions. It is interested in obtaining additional certifications, including organic certification, but the EU does not currently extend this certification to hydroponics and aquaponics systems, which are the methods used by Zero Carbon Farms. Zume Launches Sustainable Snap-fit Coffee Lids in Europe
A sustainable snap-fit lid for coffee cups is now available in Europe from Zume, a company developing alternatives to single-use plastic. The new lids are compostable, snappable, and PFAS-free and will help various brands meet their sustainability commitments without having to sacrifice performance.
Coffee is consumed more in Europe than anywhere else, resulting in excessive plastic lid waste. Only .25% of the coffee cups and lids discarded in the UK each year are recycled, leaving the rest in landfills or spilling into our waters. To-go cups cannot be eliminated from menus without a viable alternative, despite calls from regulators to reduce plastic waste. Zume is providing the solution with its sustainable snap-fit lids that can replace single-use plastic lids in Europe on a large scale. Brands can use the new lids to reduce plastic waste while developing a circular economy, from harvesting to production and disposal.
“As brands, we have a responsibility to prioritize our environmental impact the way we do our bottom lines; through our sustainable coffee lids, food brands can now do both,” said Alex Garden, CEO of Zume. “Our molded fiber lids have the same premium feel and functionality that coffee drinkers expect and show what’s possible when you combine a sustainable mindset with world-class engineering and product design at a price that makes it a cost-effective alternative to plastic.”
1. Sustainable Coffee Lids - Sustainable snap-fit coffee lids are being developed as a replacement for single-use plastic lids, creating a huge opportunity for eco-friendly packaging solutions.
2. Circular Economy for Coffee Cups - Developing a circular economy model for coffee cups through sustainable lids creates an opportunity for businesses to prioritize environmental impact along with making a profit.
3. Composting Technology - The launch of compostable snap-fit lids for coffee cups highlights the need for innovative composting technology, providing an opportunity to create more efficient methods for waste disposal.
Industry Implications
1. Coffee Packaging Industry - The coffee packaging industry can transition to sustainable snap-fit lids made of compostable materials to reduce plastic waste and meet sustainability goals.
2. Waste Management Industry - The waste management industry can capitalize on the need for more efficient composting technology for snap-fit coffee lids, creating an opportunity for innovation in waste disposal.
3. Food and Beverage Industry - The food and beverage industry can lead the way in creating a circular economy model for coffee cups by using sustainable snap-fit lids made from compostable materials.
